Boys' academic failure is a serious problem
Although school drop-out has been decreasing progressively for years in Spain, it is striking that it is 80% higher than the European average and the male dropout rate is always higher than the female rate. According to data from Eurostat (2017) the proportion of school failure is much higher among boys (22.7%) than among girls (15.1%).
If we go to data from the OECD and the PISA report there is a 14% male school failure compared to only 9% girls. By failure it is understood not to obtain the basic level of the three areas evaluated: reading, mathematics and science. The problem of this greater male school failure, despite the differences between countries, is observed, therefore, throughout the developed world.
