Single-sex education and public funding

Single-sex education, far from being linked to an era, to an ideology or to a type of schools, is growing strongly all over the world today in very different spheres, countries, cultures and political realities, but especially in advanced countries. This growth occurs mainly in the public school.

Single-sex education is an option that adapts to all types of environments and educational needs: single-sex schools or single-sex classes in mixed schools, in certain sections of the educational process or by specific subjects. It is a model that enriches the range of educational possibilities of society.

However, with certain frequency in Spain, campaigns against the differentiated school and the right to be financed with public funds. However, the defenders of a plural school vindicate the constitutional principle that establishes the right of parents to freely choose the education they want for their children. That is why the concert to these schools is necessary to cover the plurality of educational offer dictated by the Constitution.

Below we reproduce a doctoral thesis (Educación diferencia y conciertos públicos, University of Seville, Faculty of Law, Seville, 2015) where its author, Rafael Báez Serrano, presents an exhaustive tour of the Spanish educational legislation and argues the right of these centers to obtain the educational funding in equal conditions with respect to the other centers.
